Variation
B is an architectural proposal to accommodate housing units, responding
to a hot-humid climate, and which had to be built using wood as the main
material. Ventilation was needed to cool and dehumidify the space, on
the other hand, the function called for individualization (housing units).
The proposed fragmentation of the building into smaller parts exponentially
increases the exposed surface per volume.
The structure is formed by a central wooden space frame, which is connected with membranes to support quasi-tensegrities where the housing units are placed.
The whole building can be seen as a big umbrella with smaller ones underneath. Within each unit there are sun exposed and non-exposed surfaces. The former are covered with reflective low mass panels (aluminium-epu) whereas the latter are air-permeable, light diffusing, insect control providers (aluminium-jute meshes). Some specific features to highlight are the vertical circulations woven into the structure, the jointing nodes geometry, and the interior space of the housing units. |
